With dedicated funding for the unit, CHEO says it will be able to help many more newborns like Leo. Photograph by: Lucia Figueredo , CHEO The Childrenâs Hospital of Eastern Ontario says it will be able to get more seriously ill newborns to the hospitals they need to reach thanks to $3.1 million in provincial funding pledged Monday to its neonatal transport team. In the past, the team was not able to respond to all calls, often lacking the staffing to go longer distances. wow gold âWeâve not always been able to have a team available to go,â said Munter. âThat has meant teams from other regions, as far away as Toronto and London, have had to come in, or weâve had to wait to be able to go out and get critically ill newborns.â But now, CHEO says, the dedicated funding will allow for much more expanded coverage for the neonatal unit, with responders able to travel farther and more efficiently. The funds should allow the neonatal transport team to do âup to 100 extra transportsâ annually. âIt means that 24/7, 365 days a year, we will have a team equipped and ready to go throughout our region and beyond,â Munter said. wow gold CHEOâs neonatal unit, one of four in Ontario alongside units in London, Hamilton and Toronto, is charged with a significant region of Ontario. CHEOâs area spans from Moose Factory to Kingston. âThe total area covered is 440,000 square kilometres,â Munter said âTo put that into context, this neonatal transport team covers an area the same size as the entire country of Sweden. Itâs a big territory and, in that region with a population of a little over two million, there are 23,000 births per year.â Although some of the money will be used for equipment and training, most of the funding, according to Munter, will be used to hire more staff. Specifically, more nurses and respiratory therapists will top the priority list. These, along with a neonatologist and an advanced practice nurse, make up the team in charge of transporting critically ill newborns. âThey climb into airplanes, helicopters, ambulances at all hours of the day and night, in all kinds of weather, to go and rescue the truly most vulnerable and fragile lives out there,â Munter said. âThey do heroic work, and every minute matters in the kind of work they do.â Helping to announce the funding were David and Jordanna Walters and their son, Leo. The nine-week-old boy had challenges upon being born and was saved by CHEOâs neonatal care unit. âHe was transported to CHEO ... he needed cooling to reduce any potential swelling in the brain,â Fraser said. âIt was important that they got there quick.â South MPP John Fraser said the province believes the funding will be put to good use. âOur priority is to make sure people get the care that they need, the right care, in the right place,â he said. xboter 2014 |
